Smartbike is coming to DC! Last weekend I noticed the unusual rack that was recently installed outside the Reeves Center and I suspected it was a bike share rack. The concept is somewhat similar to the Zipcar concept; you take a bike and use it only when you need one. They provide the maintenance and the storage. The SmartbikeDC website shows how it works in detail and it appears an annual subscription is only $39.99 for use in blocks of up to three hours (they charge a $200 penalty if the bike isn't returned in 48 hours.)
According to the DCist article, "Bike Sharing Programs to Abound in DC," they will be fully operational by May. I clicked around to some other pics and sites and it appears they will not have a one time use rental option. We saw a similar concept in some other city on our travels and thought it quite a fantastic option. This would be very useful for tourists. Perhaps we'll have to go together with our peeps for a community membership to be used when any of us have friends in town that want to join in on a fun ride. It would be great to let Mo lead a little tourist adventure with all the bike friendly street and trail options in DC. I also found this nifty Bicycle Map on the District Dept of Transportation website.

Sundeck?
I almost forgot to publish this. On Friday afternoon as we waited in the airport, Baby Lisa sent this pic message. Steve was just about to dig the first hole for the columns to support the upper deck on the mansion! As Sister Disco said when I showed her on Sunday night, time for another road trip to Ohio!

City Bikes vs.The Bike Rack
I got my trusty Schwinn, "Mo," back today! I didn't blog about the stressful circumstances involved because I wanted to make sure I wasn't unfairly placing judgement before I went off...and now I'm going to go off. Don't F%#K with The District. It's a long one, but hopefully will prevent future victims.
You might recall the excitement from April 19th when I took Mo to The Bike Rack. I asked for a basic tune-up to get him rolling and safe to see if I enjoyed biking in the District. I've had Mo since 1994 (I think) but other than the first two years, I really haven't ridden him. He has low miles, but was kept outside on the covered balcony & porch for about a year, which is quite damaging to a bike. A really nice dude, I think his name was Chris or Casey, helped me out that day. He collaborated with two other employees to look over my bike. They came up with a recommendation to do a tune-up, replace the shifter & brake cables, and to replace my chain. They said the cables were corroded and absolutely unsafe. The quote was a reasonable $165. considering I paid over $400. for the bike fourteen years ago. They added up the cost on a piece of scrap paper and I signed the official work order with a written estimate of $165. I went on my way, and was anxiously awaiting the Thursday delivery date.
Here's where it gets interesting. I get a call from Dave, on Wednesday, who tells me the person who wrote my estimate didn't itemize it and it was incorrect. He said all the parts and labor added up to $221. + tax. I was originally told much of the labor (ie: installing chain, cables, etc.) was included since I was getting a full tune up; not true. I asked if they could discount it to compensate for the misquote. He said absolutely not. Knowing this was a relatively new business with owners that were very involved, I asked to speak with one of them. I was told that he was the "Manager" and that I needed to speak with him. I asked Dave to itemize the costs so I could rethink the situation. He gladly did, but it only added up to $183.80. Something dirty was going on. Originally $165, then $221, and when I added it up, $183.80. I was pissed and demanded to speak to the owner. Dave reluctantly and rudely gave me over to Wayne.
Wayne agreed that the new itemization was $183.80. He apologized for the original misquote and for the discrepancy in my verbal re-quote from Dave. Wayne wasn't willing to give a discount for my inconvenience or their errors, but since it was now only $19 more, I said to go ahead! I can accept a simple mistake and was anxious to hit the trails with Rita Jean and Sister Disco. Wayne was a really nice guy on the phone and I trusted him. This was a sharp contrast to Disdainful Dave.
It's not over yet! I get a call about an hour later and was told my front shifter was broken. I knew it didn't work properly, but thought it was just stuck or misadjusted. In the very few times I've ridden in the last several years, I didn't use the seven "easy" or seven "hard" gears anyway. The middle seven provide a wide enough range for a casual rider (Who really needs 21 speeds?) Wayne says this is now going to cost me another $51 for the single front shifter. It had to be done if they were replacing all the cables. We were then up to $235 plus tax, and they hadn't even checked the bearings or other parts of the bike yet.
Wayne didn't recommend making the repairs. He'd be happy to sell me a more efficient and modern bike in the $400-$500 range. He also suggested some charities where I could donate the old one; even offered to arrange for them to get it from his shop if I paid a $10 shipping fee. Interesting. He said there wouldn't be any repair charge since they didn't do any work and had misquoted upfront. That night I felt sick to my stomach when I went to pick up Mo and bring him home to die...I thought perhaps I could dig out my tools and get a few good rides out of him before I replaced him with a new model. When I arrived, his chain was missing. While it was a bit rusty, it did work, and it was my chain. They gave me another one to replace it. It was an odd situation, but I took the slightly used secondhand chain and left. (I tried to look at new bikes, but Wayne left me several times to help other more important? customers.)
I ran through Adam's Morgan last Saturday in preparation for the marathon. I passed City Bikes and couldn't stop thinking about Mo. While their tune-up price was higher, they recieved better reviews on Yelp and their website proudly displays many consumer awards. I came to the realization that I'd never take the time to tinker with him myself and I at least owed him a "second opinion."
I worked from home on Thursday and Timmy came by to get the car around noon. I decided to take a lunch trip and asked him to drop me off at City Bikes. It was busy for a Thursday, but the fact they had a lot of customers felt like a good thing. I patiently waited in line and was helped by Mark. I explained my basic desire to get the bike rolling and safe, and explained what I was told to have done by "another" shop.
Mark looked over Mo, suggested the cables were probably safe as they just had minor surface corrosion and weren't sticking or worn down. He thought the cassette should be replaced, but said everything else looked like it just needed tuned up. Mark gave me an estimate of $139.58. If I was a more serious rider, he would suggest replacing both shifters and integrated brake levers for only $70, but offered to adjust the broken one so I'd have use of 14 gears associated with the two usable chainrings (only 1 gear setting missing.) He recommended seeing how much I ride the bike and replacing that later if I took up more ambitious riding. Mark also assured me that the quality of my frame alone made it worthwhile to invest in the bike repairs.
I couldn't believe it - There was hope! Mark very clearly set expectations that some cable might need replacement or that there could be costly bearing problems or other hidden issues. He said they'd call if they found that to be the case, but if I didn't hear from them, I could pick it up on Saturday. With great skepticism, I signed the computer generated work order detailing every individual thing they would do, left Mo in their care, and went back to work. I agreed to pick him up this week since I would be out of town for the weekend.
I worked from home again today and drove up there for my lunch break. Mo was fully recovered! It cost exactly $139.58. I'm absolutely thrilled beyond belief and can't wait for the rain to stop so I can have evening summer rides on the fabulous trails around this fine city! I used $25 of the money I saved to buy a basic bike computer to track my mileage. The sales dude wasn't judgmental that I just wanted a really basic item and happily showed me the features to compare and answered my questions.
The next time you need new gear or bike repair, you will have to decide whether to choose The Bike Rack in Logan Circle or City Bikes in Adams Morgan. While I usually support GLBT businesses, I usually do this because they differentiate themselves from the competition with their superior products and services. Unfortunately it was not the case this time. Mo absolutely has a new straight primary care provider in Adams Morgan!

$6 pitchers
It aint the p-rat, but it is a whole different kind of Sunday Funday!
The place was actually pretty grose, but Aaron liked his food and we had a good laugh. Nashville Scene writes a pretty good article on it, but if you check tripadvisor, etc., it is really poorly rated. Definitely something to be said for a bar that has old cast iron bathtubs as coolers!
Paradise Park
Nothing quite like a trailer park themed bar. We got rained out of the 25th Annual Main Street Festival in Historic Franklin, TN and ended up back in Nashville on Broadway (music row) where we'll have a few trashy drinks before heading to the airport tonight.

Chappy's on Church
A tisket a tasket, a jew and her basket! This is how leftover bread is sent home at this fab restaurant. Time for the bar!
UPDATE: This mobile post was sent with good intention, but after our amazing meals, we had a single drink at Blue Gene's Bar and rolled back to Franklin for a few beers and bed! Nobody was up for a rock star night. Check out Chappy's on Church. I had a blackened Grouper smothered in a hearty Shrimp, Crab, and Mushroom Saute topped with Hollandaise sauce. It was served with the most delicious stuffed baked potato. Delicious food, fantastic wine, a memorable character of a waitress, and about fifteen wealthy kids from Nashville in couture gowns/tuxes dancing to the live music (I am guessing post prom?) Fun Times

I DID IT!!!
Nashville is really hilly and I'm beat, but i finished a half marathon! I think I did it in under 2:30 but I dont know my official time yet
UPDATE: Official Time: 2:28:50 = 11:22 Race Pace. I registered at a 12:00 race pace and was hoping for 11:00. I am very pleased with the results considering the wretched hills and the fact I had to wait in line for a porta potty somewhere around mile 7. Now it is time to shower and celebrate! Click here for full statistics
UPDATE II: I bought the personalized video of the finish line to prove that I did it. Most of it is general footage, but at the end, you will see two separate shots of me crossing the finish line. I come in the left side of the screen and can be most easily identified by my gimpy knee brace.

Go
I found my friend Erin and she joined my slow coral. We are starting in the next group. Takes a long time to start this many runners
McDonalds drive thru
Timmy bailed due to the rain and my DC runner friends must not be carrying their phones. While i ate an appropriate breakfast, i am seeking shelter in this drive thru. It is going to be a long wet cold run if this doesnt stop and i'm guessing my cell phone will be ruined.
Race Day
Good Morning Chirrens!
Arrived safely in Nashville yesterday and got our luggage from old carousel #7...actually it was #3, but was decorated as the Jack Daniels carousel (just for Vergie I'm sure.) Tim & ML dropped me off at the Convention Center for the fitness expo and went to the Blue Genes bar to wait on me. I guess there weren't many slow runners because the line to final register for my coral was super fast. They barely had their first drink before I was calling for a ride. I walked down Music Row (or something like that) past all the old bars and studios while I waited...and waited to be picked up. Back to Blue Genes for a few more drinks (water for me) and then to Cool Springs for a carb loading dinner and off to bed we went by 10 PM.
We got up bright and early at 4:15 Central Time to shower and head into the city. Timmy is getting ready now and then we'll hopefully be headed out by 5:00 AM! Let's just say Cynthia is not amused and to top it off, is raining like crazy. I guess we'll have to stop and buy her an umbrella at the gas station.
ML has to work today so he won't be joining us as expected, but he did give us a lovely BMW 330 Convertible to drive for the weekend. His new house, by the way, magnificent. I don't have time to upload the pics and make a proper post, so mobile blogging later will have to do. Wish me luck - I'll blog from the lineup!

24 Hour Countdown
I will be lined up in corral 24 sporting # 24884 tomorrow morning at this time, ready to take off in the Country Music Marathon! in Nashville, Tennessee. I am a slow fat girl so my pace will probably be pathetic, but the objective is the finish...not the win! I'm stoked that my knee, while sore, has held up through this training. It just needs to get me 13.1 miles tomorrow morning in a hurry. It should take me between 2:24 - 2:37 total, but perhaps the adrenaline will allow me to finish faster. My original goal was 2:11, but I'm fairly certain that is unobtainable without injury.
If successful with this 1/2 marathon, I may look for a full marathon to work on next. The preparation process has proven to be quite a kick into healthy living. Don't worry RJ, I'll still have Rock Star benders with you, I'll just have a healthier body so we can squeeze more bars into our crawls! We'll beat Bar Crawls 214 and 327 with our eyes closed.
The marathon starts at 7, but will begin in waves so I may not start for quite awhile after that. If you're up and curious, click over the the website and click on the live results button (It's supposed to be there tomorrow) and see how I'm doing. The chip will register and publish my times at the 5k, 10k, 10 mile, and finish line.
If you're not awake, check back here or at TimmyCam during the day for potential mobile blogging opportunities ranging from me a) falling out, crying, and then drinking, b) finishing, crying, and then drinking, c) Timmy making arrangements for my body to be delivered back to DC for the funeral! I'm pushing for option B, but Timmy is probably checking the insurance policies before he makes his decision.
Time to pack, clean, and jump on a plane! Hopefully we'll see Dolly Pardon in Nashville! It is the Country Music Marathon after all.

Electronic Lockdown
This is an RJ alert. No, he's not missing (i didnt say amber alert.) After buying a $10 pink poncho from a hippie and pushing to the front of the stage so RJ could see Chevy Chase up close (she's such a star fuxxer) we were herded off the mall by the park police due to the electrical storm. We decided to eat and drink. To make a long story short, RJ's comment of the day was, "you can really burn around the city quick on this bitch." I made him take metro using his first smart trip card compliments of train wreck. i mean we couldnt ride Habib to earth day. RJ should have purchased a poncho because the front pocket on her 2 dollar garage sale rain hoodie filled with water and suberged her phone. She is alive, but subsequently on electronic lockdown. I think I feel a chimney coming on.

Party Time!
Happy homemaking Eric & Matt! We are at a fab Logan Circle pad celebrating cohabitation with friends!
D List Gays
I took a lovely stroll pushing my old bike down to The Bike Rack for a repair estimate so I can add another fun fitness option to my routine. This bike has been loosely chained in the garage for the last 5 years and truly hasn't been ridden in a long while. I wasn't sure if it should be scrapped, but apparently it is still worth something. The hot tattooed employes said a new one of equivalent quality would cost $5-600 new. I opted for the complete overhaul and it should be ready in 4-5 days! Despite some of the negative online reviews, they were very nice and didn't throw too much attitude.
Met Sister Disco for lunch at Mercado where she informed me that, while I may be a D-list gay, I did make page 65 "Scene" Section of Metro Weekly. Grab a copy or click over to Metroweekly.com to check out the pic for yourself. I barely even remember being at Blowoff after the fiasco at the Drag Show at Town.
If you're Catholic and interested, click over to see Sister Disco Welcome Pope Benedict XVI or go to hear how Knee Deep in Mud participated in Pope-a-po-looza. If you're less religious, head over to Polly's Cafe and eat a Pope Benedict, the weekend special version of Eggs Benedict (according to the sign.) I know...
Ham Sandwich
Morning peeps. I am sure everyone is still up in the bed, but I've once again ridden to work with Timmy and run back home. Today's adventure took me from Spring Valley to the Naval Observatory to Wisconsin Ave all the way down to M Street in Georgetown. I then ran across the city and back up to U Street for a total of 6.48 miles. My time was a somewhat dismal 11:52/mile. I had hoped it would be faster with all the downhills (click here and then click the elevation button at the bottom of the map to see what I mean) but I guess the grueling uphills that kicked my azz probably slowed me down.
This is my shortened recovery long run; the last one before next week's marathon! I found out that anyone interested can track my progress online during the actual marathon. I know...nobody cares, but just in case you do, I'll post the link and my info before the race. Two more short 3 mile runs this week and then it's game time! Woo Hoo!
I almost forgot the reference from this post title. This morning I woke up craving a cigarette and a ham sandwich. I decided both were bad, but the ham sandwich would be a better thing to cave in to (you know...protein and carbs before a run?) I made the mistake of using mustard. I had heartburn for the ENTIRE run this morning and kept tasting mustard every time I gagged. I will never eat a ham sandwich with mustard before running again. Now I'm going to take my fresh lungs out on the balcony for a smokey treat! I will quit...someday.

Earth Day is coming!
Here's a reminder for those of you living on earth: Tuesday, April 22, is Earth Day, but most cities will be celebrating it on Sunday, April 20th. Click here to find events in your area or plan to go with me to the FLAGSHIP Earth Day event in DC! I've never participated in one of the formal events, but I continue to lean green so it should be fun and push me a little further down that path.

Big Tom does Greece!
Hey friends - in case you weren't aware, pop over to BigTDogHouse and check out Big Tom's European adventures! I've added a link on the side as well if you don't have time today.
I'm particularly fond of the pic with the guard. I so make Whitney do that kind of stuff when we travel because I never have the courage to do it myself!

Bachelorette Party
I apparently tried to be a rock star last night. After drinking all afternoon on 17th Street, we ventured to Town (Drag Show) and the 9:30 Club (Blowoff Party.)
We became part of a bachelorette party. Had a great time and gave them our email address. Wow - what a mess. Here's one of the tamer pics. I think I may have drunk dialed Boston - sorry Bosox Siobhan...

Ran too far!
NOTE: The route above is out and back...I intended to rely on the mile markers to measure my distance today instead of mapping out a specific run. The mile markers on the crescent trail were missing (I think due to construction) below Georgetown so I used a bridge as my start/end point and Little Falls Parkway between Bethesda/Chevy Chase as my turnaround point. I thought it was about 12 miles based on my estimates.
I nearly died on the last half mile and my legs are in serious pain. To my surprise, when I got home and mapped my run (see above) I realized it was nearly 13 miles! In addition, I shaved time off, averaging 11:49 minutes per mile. While this is still fat girl slow, it is an improvement for me!
I've saved up all week and haven't been drinking since last weekend. Time to get my game on (after a nap of course.)

Hard Floor
I just rode my first metro train with the new linoleum floors. It is a soft grey retro pattern. They feel gritty, but they are undoubtedly cleaner than the dirty old carpets. The woman next to me probably thinks I'm odd as she caught me taking a pic of this woman's foot.

Dirty Ass?
Here's another post stolen from Knee Deep In Mud. I couldn't resist reposting it here as it cracks me up. I know many people with pooping phobias. Perhaps this foam, and it's promise to prevent the dirty ass, will help. Watch this commercial and then rush right over to their website to place your order.

Nine Miles
Friends...I did it! I ran this many miles without injuring myself this morning! I may not be fast, (still around 12 minute miles) but I am going to do it! I just registered for the Country Music 1/2 Marathon on April 26. Airfare to Nashville, TN purchased, accommodations with friends confirmed, and I'm stoked about the run. The music...not so much, but it should be fun.
Had a great run today and now it is time to get ready to roll up to Philly to see our peeps!
Kill The Goat
I have commented on this blog before. Coincidentally, her name is also Jay, and she previously dated a man named Jason. I found her one day looking for blogs on goats. I know...weird. The address for Jay's blog, "Kill The Goat," is saintvodkaofthemartini.blogspot.com - I thought, Goats & Vodka? Sounds like the youth of someone I know. Regardless, I frequently enjoy her thoughts and her post from Saturday, "The Race Against Toronto," describes exactly how I feel about running. Here's an excerpt:
"I'm not a fast runner. I'm not a graceful runner. There is nothing easy or effortless about it. I am awkward, and panty, and my feet look funny in running shoes as opposed to high heels, but damn if I don't get some crazy satisfaction out of it anyway."
...well, sans the high heels part, I get what she is saying. I've spoken about how I love to run in the city, how it makes me feel alive and part of the world, etc. Kill the Goat puts it into perspective. While you're there, look at her site. You'll come across snipits of wisdom like, "Sex is not the answer. Sex is the question; yes is the answer." Check it out!
I'm leaving now to run 9 miles!

This is what happens to amateurs who try to do a bar crawl with The District and Rita Jean.

Cougar Corner
...sometimes you just have to run to your scanner and upload immediately. I received the Spring magazine from the Nazarene University where I obtained my undergraduate degree. On the back cover, they announce the "Heritage Bookstore" has been renamed the "Cougar Corner." Interesting. Very interesting. Click on the pic and check out the two women posing for the picture. Someone knows what is going on here; A bad kitty and her lesbian lover perhaps?
